Omoda’s sister brand introduces an electrified J7 with a 90 km electric-only range and exceptional overall fuel economy.

Jaecoo has confirmed that its J7 SHS plug-in hybrid SUV will officially launch in South Africa in June 2025, marking a significant milestone for the brand’s local expansion into electrified mobility.

The arrival of the J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System) signals the beginning of several new electrified offerings planned for the local market. Building on the success of the J7 petrol version, the plug-in hybrid variant drastically improves fuel efficiency while reducing emissions.

Impressive electric range and efficiency

The standout feature of the J7 SHS is its 90-kilometer all-electric driving range, enabling most daily commutes to be completed without consuming any fuel or producing tailpipe emissions.

This capability is powered by a 18,3 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery that can be rapidly charged using a 40 kW DC charger, reaching 30-80% capacity in just 20 minutes.

The hybrid powertrain combines a turbocharged 1,5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering power through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) system. This configuration achieves fuel economy of less than 5 litres per 100 kilometres, positioning it among the most efficient vehicles in its class, according to the manufacturer.

During a recent real-world test covering 1 100 kilometres between Cape Town and Gqeberha, the J7 SHS demonstrated its efficiency credentials by recording an average fuel consumption of just 4,88 ℓ/100km. The vehicle’s combined range extends to an impressive 1 200 kilometres on a single tank of fuel, Jaecoo claims.

Premium features and technology

According to the brand, the J7 SHS comes generously equipped with premium features and advanced safety technology. The interior features leather trim complemented by ambient lighting, while an eight-speaker Sony sound system provides audio entertainment alongside wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Safety remains a priority with more than 15 driver assistance features fitted as standard, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic assist with braking.

The exterior is enhanced by 19-inch alloy wheels that complement the compact SUV’s styling.

Brand expansion and market position

Shannon Gahagan, national brand and marketing manager for Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa, emphasised the significance of this launch for the brand’s local presence. “The J7 SHS represents a significant step forward for the Jaecoo brand in South Africa,” Gahagan stated.

“It brings together performance, efficiency and premium comfort in a way that meets the evolving needs of today’s drivers – whether they’re looking to reduce emissions, save on fuel, or simply enjoy the flexibility of an electrified drive,” she added.

The J7 SHS launch is part of Jaecoo’s broader expansion strategy in South Africa, with the J5 model and additional electrified vehicles from the Omoda & Jaecoo stable planned for introduction in the coming months.

Warranty and support

All Jaecoo models come with a 5-year/70 000 km service plan and a 5-year/150 000 km factory warranty, supported by 5-year roadside assistance. The engine warranty extends to a 10-year/1-million kilometre coverage for the first owner.

Jaecoo operates nearly 40 dedicated dealerships across South Africa’s major metropolitan areas and cities.

Pricing

The manufacturer will announce local pricing and complete specifications for the J7 SHS closer to launch.
