OPPO A79 smartphone arrives in South Africa

OPPO has expanded its A-series lineup in South Africa with the launch of the A79 5G. Highlights include a super bright display, 256GB of storage, and a promise that it will perform as well in its third year as it did on the day you unboxed it.

Display and cameras

The A79 5G sports a 6.72-inch FHD+ Sunlight Display with a peak brightness of 680 nits, to offer good visibility outdoors. The camera system comprises a 50MP main sensor and a 2MP portrait lens on the rear, paired with an 8MP selfie camera. AI capabilities are present for features like portrait retouching and 108MP Ultra Clear images.

Performance and battery

Under the hood, the MediaTek Dimensity 6020 5G chipset powers the device, supported by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The phone packs a 5 000 mAh battery with 33W SUPERVOOC™ fast charging for rapid recharging capabilities.

In the past, some smartphone makers (notably Apple and Samsung) have received fines for deliberately slowing down their products’ performance. OPPO says the A79 5G has passed its 36-Month Fluency Protection test. This ensures guaranteed ‘fluency’ for up to 36 months that allows users to enjoy the same smoothness as a new phone even after long periods of use, according to OPPO.

OPPO has equipped the A79 with dual stereo speakers, promising 40 percent increased volume compared to the previous generation for enhanced multimedia experiences. The smartphone maker states that “advanced algorithms further enhance audio quality by reducing noise and suppressing echo, thus improving the clarity of calls and media playback.”

The phone comes in Dazzling Purple and Mystery Black colour options and boasts an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance.

Availability and pricing

The OPPO A79 5G is priced at R11 999 for the 8GB RAM + 256GB ROM variant and is available for purchase through OPPO stores and partner retailers in South Africa. It comes with a USB data cable, charger, and protective case.

Buyers should also consider rivals like the Apple iPhone 11 128GB, Apple iPhone 12 64GB, OPPO A98 5G 256GB, HONOR 90 512GB 5G + HONOR Watch 4, and Vivo V25 5G 256GB.
