With the introduction of its Exter, Hyundai South Africa is likely to gain a strong foothold in the local entry-level SUV class.

The Hyundai Exter arrives at just the right time for the brand, facing stiff competition in the compact SUV segment from rivals like the Suzuki Fronx, Nissan-Renault’s Magnite and Kiger, and the Chery Tiggo 4. It will also have to contend with the newly launched Mahindra XUV 3XO.

Hyundai offers the Exter in three equipment levels with five variants:

  • Exter 1.2 Premium (manual transmission) and Exter 1.2 Premium AMT (automated manual transmission*),
  • Exter 1.2 Executive (manual) and Exter 1.2 Executive AMT,
  • Exter 1.2 Elite AMT, the flagship model.

As a smaller sibling to the Hyundai Venue, the Exter measures 180 mm shorter and 60 mm narrower. Powering the Exter is a naturally aspirated 1,2-litre petrol engine, the same unit found in the entry-level Venue and i20, as well as certain Grand i10 models. This engine drives the front wheels through either a five-speed manual or AMT gearbox, with a power output of 61 kW at 6 000 r/min and peak torque of 114 Nm at 4 000 r/min.

With a weight under one tonne, the Exter offers decent performance. Hyundai claims fuel consumption of 5,7 to 5,9 litres per 100 km under ideal conditions, though real-world figures are likely closer to 6,0 to 6,5 litres per 100 km.

Safety features

Safety is one of the Exter’s key selling points. Standard across the range are six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, an open-door warning, speed-sensing auto door locks, and ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).

The higher-spec AMT variants and the Elite also feature Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC). Rear parking sensors are included for all models, with a rearview camera added to the Executive and Elite trims.

Hyundai highlights the Exter’s robust body structure, which incorporates advanced high-strength steel for improved crash energy absorption. This design enhances occupant protection in both frontal and side collisions.

Exterior design

Despite its compact size, the Exter maintains a ground clearance of 185 mm, giving it the ability to handle rougher roads. The Executive and Elite trims come equipped with 15” diamond-cut alloy wheels, while the Premium variant features 15” steel wheels with hubcaps.

To boost its off-road appearance, Hyundai has added bold silver skid plates at the front and rear. The Executive and Elite variants also come with bridge-type roof rails capable of supporting up to 70 kg, making them suitable for carrying equipment like roof-top tents (though it’s recommended to confirm this with a Hyundai service manager). The boot offers 290 litres of cargo space.

Customers can choose from six exterior colours: Atlas White, Cosmic Blue, Tomboy Khaki, Fiery Red, Titan Grey, and Starry Night. Additionally, the Executive and Elite variants offer three two-tone options: Cosmic Blue with a black roof, Tomboy Khaki with a black roof, and Atlas White with a black roof.

Interior features

Inside, the seat colours vary, depending on the exterior colour combination: black with grey, blue, or sage accents. The Premium and Executive variants have cloth upholstery, while the Elite offers a mix of cloth and artificial leather. The driver’s seat is height-adjustable across all variants.

An 8” high-definition infotainment system, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, is standard across the lineup. In the Executive and Elite models, this screen also displays the feed from the rearview camera. Other features include a sunroof in the Elite trim, paddle shifters in the Executive AMT and Elite variants, and cruise control for the Executive and Elite.

Final thoughts

The Hyundai Exter makes its entry at a time when the South African automotive market is poised for a slow recovery, driven by slightly lower lending rates, a more optimistic political outlook, and improving economic conditions. With the popularity of the larger Hyundai Venue, the Exter has the potential to establish a solid foothold in this competitive segment.

Every Exter comes with Hyundai’s 7-year/200 000 km warranty and a 3-year/45 000 km service plan.
