Toyota South Africa has introduced the latest addition to its Fortuner range, the GR-S (Gazoo Racing Sport) variant, which brings a blend of sportier styling and enhanced driving dynamics.

This version builds on the Fortuner’s reputation as a rugged, family-friendly SUV while incorporating design and performance tweaks inspired by Toyota’s motorsport division.

Stronger styling and sportier presence
The Fortuner GR-S stands out with a more aggressive front bumper, black front spoiler, and a redesigned lower grille. It rides on 18-inch GR alloy wheels and is available in two colour options: Attitude Black and Platinum Pearl White. The interior receives a motorsport-inspired makeover, featuring black-and-red upholstery, GR-branded sports seats, and aluminium pedals.

Performance enhancements
Under the bonnet, the Fortuner GR-S is powered by a 2,8-litre GD-6 turbo diesel engine, producing 165 kW and 550 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful Fortuner to date.
It retains a six-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system, while a monotube shock absorber setup aims to improve ride comfort and handling. Monotube shocks offer better heat dissipation and more consistent damping performance, enhancing stability on rough terrain and improving overall ride quality.

While Toyota has focused on performance tweaks for the GR-S, the Fortuner remains a practical SUV, maintaining its seven-seat layout, off-road capabilities, and Toyota’s reputation for durability.
The addition of GR-S badging and subtle mechanical upgrades aims to appeal to buyers looking for a slightly more engaging driving experience without sacrificing everyday usability.

Pricing and availability
The Toyota Fortuner 2.8 GD-6 4×4 GR Sport is priced at R999 000 and includes a nine-service/90 000 km service plan and a three-year/100 000 km warranty.

With its combination of sportier styling and improved performance, the Fortuner GR-S adds a new dimension to Toyota’s popular SUV lineup while maintaining the versatility that has made it a favourite among South African buyers.
