Scout Motors, under Volkswagen Group ownership, has unveiled two new models, the Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra pickup, ushering in a new era of rugged, American-made vehicles.
Inspired by the original Scout models (produced by International Harvester from 1961 to 1980), both the Traveler and Terra embody a blend of off-road toughness and electric performance. The vehicles feature a body-on-frame chassis, solid rear axles, and mechanical lockers for enhanced off-road capability, paired with modern electric drivetrains.
Power, performance, and versatility
Both models offer battery-electric and range-extended options. The fully electric variants will provide up to 563 km of range, while the range-extended models – equipped with gas-powered generators – can stretch that to 805 km. With dual motors generating approximately 1 356 Nm of torque in total, the vehicles can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 3,6 seconds.
Towing capacity is a major selling point: the Terra pickup can tow 4 540 kg, while the Traveler SUV manages 3 175 kg. Both vehicles can handle nearly 900 kg of payload, making them highly functional for both adventurers and work-oriented users. Off-roaders will appreciate the 35-inch tyres, over 30 cm of ground clearance, and a water-fording depth of nearly 90 cm.
Design and features
Scout’s rugged exterior design is paired with modern, minimalist interiors that feature durable materials and tactile controls, moving away from touch-only systems. Both vehicles are equipped with bi-directional charging, multiple power outlets (including 120V and 240V), and modular interiors to accommodate different needs. The Traveler offers a split tailgate, while the Terra comes with a 1,68m load bed, ideal for heavy-duty work or outdoor use.
Scout Motors’ “Connection Machine” philosophy integrates advanced software and hardware, allowing for over-the-air updates and a personalised user experience. A proprietary system called Harvester™ powers the range-extended models, maintaining off-road capability while alleviating range anxiety.
Customer-centric approach
Scout plans to sell and service the vehicles directly through exclusive retail spaces, aiming for “seamless customer experiences with transparent pricing,” the manufacturer claims. Entry-level models will start at R950 000* for the Traveler SUV and R978 000 for the Terra pickup.
Production will begin in 2027 at a new facility in South Carolina in the US, aiming to create over 4 000 jobs.
The new Scout models are designed for a modern audience while paying homage to their heritage. Scout Motors promises to deliver vehicles that blend electric innovation with classic off-road toughness, targeting outdoor enthusiasts, families, and professionals alike.
