The GWM Ora 03 is an all-electric vehicle that brings eco-friendly mobility to the group’s lineup in South Africa. With its combination of safety, style, technology, and relative affordability, it makes a strong case for EV ownership. Here are five things you should know about the Ora 03.
1. There’s a reason it reminds you of a Porsche
The GWM Ora 03 merges retro charm with modern technology. Its round headlights and teardrop shape give it a nostalgic appeal, while flowing curves and a pert rear give it a charming, futuristic look. The vehicle’s design, spearheaded by a former Porsche designer, Emanuel Derta, stands out in the EV market.
The cabin is spacious, but there’s one particularly frustrating design flaw: The boot provides a miniscule capacity of just 288 litres.
2. It’s almost the cheapest EV in SA
Starting at R686 950 for the entry-level version, the GWM Ora 03 is the second most affordable electric vehicle (EV) range in South Africa after the BYD Dolphin. This is the Ora 03 range:
- GWM Ora 03 300 Super Luxury – R686 950
- GWM Ora 03 400 Super Luxury – R775 950
- GWM Ora 03 400 Ultra Luxury – R805 950
- GWM Ora 03 400 GT Ultra Luxury – R835 950
Note that the Volvo EX30 range enters the ring at R791 900, while the BYD Dolphin range jumps in at a relatively low R539 000. The Ora 03 and BYD Dolphin are almost of the same size – slightly smaller than a Toyota Corolla Hatch.
3. It offers decent driving range
The Ora 03 offers a choice between two battery sizes. The 300 Super Luxury provides up to 310 km of range on a single charge, while the “400” versions boast a range of up to 420 km.
Charging the battery is a relatively quick process, with fast charging boosting the battery from 10 to 90 percent in under an hour. This combination of long range and fast charging makes the Ora 03, especially the “400” derivatives, practical for both city trips and longer-distance travel.
4. It’s loaded with safety tech
The Ora 03 is packed with advanced safety technology, earning it a five-star crash-safety rating from both Euro NCAP and ANCAP. Its features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Traffic Sign Recognition.
The vehicle also provides excellent protection for its occupants, scoring high in tests for adult, child, and vulnerable road user safety. These safety features not only enhance the driving experience but also offer peace of mind for families.
5. It’s full of luxury, fun features
The interior of the GWM Ora 03 is designed to immerse occupants in a luxurious and tech-forward environment. It features two 10,25” touchscreens, leatherette seats, and Apple CarPlay, with Android Auto coming soon.
The rotary-style gear selector and wireless charging pad add to its modern feel. Those opting for the higher-end model derivatives will enjoy extras like heated, ventilated, and massaging seats, as well as a panoramic sunroof and automated parking.
One of the Ora’s most charming features happens on its centre screen, where each day starts with a serene animation of koi fish gliding gracefully. This offers the driver a peaceful, Zen-like moment before the journey begins.
Should you buy it?
With its mix of style, advanced technology, and safety, the GWM Ora 03 has a lot going for it. Although its sales performance in South Africa has been less than stellar, especially when compared to the EVs offered by BMW and Volvo, it remains an attractive vehicle with a fun character.
