MG South Africa has officially launched the MG ZS, a stylish compact crossover designed with affordability and practicality in mind.
Positioned as an ideal SUV for young families, the ZS has already made a significant impact globally, having been sold in over 100 countries with sales exceeding one million units. MG claims that the model has covered more than 700 million kilometres worldwide, solidifying its reputation for reliability.
Confidence in quality and reliability
To reinforce its commitment to reliability, MG highlights its connection to the SAIC Group, which also oversees SAIC Volkswagen and SAIC-GM. This shared supply chain system ensures standardised components, consistent quality control, and cost efficiencies. Adding to this confidence is MG’s extensive 7-year/200 000 km warranty, which is among the best in the segment.
Comprehensive safety features
The MG ZS is serious about safety. Its spacious cabin comes equipped with six airbags covering the front, side, and curtain areas. Additionally, its active safety package is impressive for a vehicle in this price bracket.
The 9th-generation Bosch ESP system integrates eight key safety features, including: Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), Hydraulic Brake Boost (HBB), Traction Control System (TCS), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), and Hill-start Hold Control (HHC).
A tyre pressure monitoring system is also included as standard, which is rare for this segment.
Room for improvement
Under the bonnet, the ZS is powered by a 1,5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 84 kW and 150 Nm of torque. While this powertrain may not deliver exhilarating performance, it provides sufficient acceleration for daily use.
During our test drive on roads between Hermanus and Stellenbosch, the engine performed adequately, but the four-speed automatic transmission occasionally struggled to choose between third and fourth gears, going back and forth between the two. This minor annoyance could be addressed with additional gear ratios in future models.
Driving dynamics and comfort
The MG ZS offers a well-balanced driving experience, enhanced by three selectable steering modes: Urban, Normal, and Dynamic. Standard 17-inch alloy wheels contribute to a composed and comfy ride. The Comfort model features a rugged turbine-style wheel design, while the Luxury variant sports diamond-cut two-tone alloys.
Despite being classified as a B-segment SUV, the ZS is surprisingly spacious. The rear passenger area offers generous kneeroom and ample foot space, making it comfortable for long journeys. The boot capacity ranges from 359 litres, without the 40/60 split rear seats folded flat.
Tech and convenience features
MG has equipped the ZS with a solid range of technology and convenience features. The Luxury variant comes with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring a reverse camera, while both models include Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration.
Additional features include rear parking distance control, remote central locking, speed-activated door locking, electric windows (one-touch for the driver), heated and electric door mirrors, and cruise control. The Comfort model includes a 4-speaker audio system, while the Luxury version upgrades to a 6-speaker setup with 3D sound.
Visual appeal and personalisation
The primary visual distinctions between the two derivatives lie in the alloy wheels and upholstery. The Comfort model features classic houndstooth check cloth seats, whereas the Luxury trim comes with simulated leather upholstery. Buyers can choose from an extensive colour palette, including white, black, red, orange, blue, and silver, with no additional charge for specific paint options.
A welcome addition to the market
Competing with cars like the Chery Tiggo 4 and Omoda C5 Street, the MG ZS brings much-needed affordability and competition to the market. It sets a new benchmark for value for money, offering a high level of safety, practicality, and comfort at an accessible price point.
While the automatic transmission could use refinement, most buyers are unlikely to see it as a deal-breaker.
Pricing and warranty
- ZS 1.5 Auto Comfort – R289 900
- ZS 1.5 Auto Luxury – R309 900
Both versions of the MG ZS come with a 7-year/200 000 km warranty and a 5-year/60 000 km service plan, which are transferable if the vehicle is sold within that period.
With its combination of affordability, practicality, and generous standard features, the MG ZS is set to make a strong impression in South Africa’s highly competitive crossover market.
