Thule has introduced the Outset, a first-of-its-kind tow-bar-mounted tent that simplifies outdoor camping for adventurers. This innovative tent eliminates the challenges associated with rooftop tents while providing comfort and easy access.

Designed for versatility, the Thule Outset attaches directly to a vehicle’s tow bar, allowing quick setup and breakdown within five minutes. Unlike traditional rooftop tents, it frees the car roof for additional gear, such as bikes or a cargo carrier, and positions the tent in the vehicle’s slipstream, minimising its impact on fuel consumption.

Ease of access

One of the Outset’s standout features is its user-friendly accessibility. The low-mounted design ensures that children, seniors, and pets can easily enter the tent, while the spacious interior allows campers to sit upright, making it more comfortable than compact rooftop models.

Additionally, it offers flexibility – once at the campsite, users can detach the tent and still take their vehicle for day trips, with the tent securely locked behind.

Wheeled convenience

Despite its convenience, setting up the Outset requires some muscle, as it weighs around 70 kg. However, Thule has integrated wheels and a lever system to make hitching it to the car more manageable for solo campers. Once attached, the tent includes safety features like built-in indicators and a 13-pin electrical socket to ensure safe towing on the road.

Weather and ventilation

This product also performs well in various weather conditions. Its rain cover and ventilation systems prevent condensation buildup, ensuring comfort during rainy nights. However, as the Outset is bulkier than traditional ground tents, proper storage and handling are recommended, particularly for those with limited garage space.

Availability and price

With the continuing popularity of outdoor adventures in South Africa, the Thule Outset offers a fresh alternative to traditional camping setups. It is available through Thule Concept stores nationwide, alongside the brand’s established range of cargo carriers, bike racks, and accessories.

This tent promises to enhance the outdoor experience, combining practicality with innovation and opening up new possibilities for weekend getaways.

The Thule Outset is priced at R90 000.
