Lexus continues its gradual electric transition with the new ES sedan, now offering both hybrid and fully electric powertrain options alongside its existing RZ electric crossover.

Lexus has unveiled its all-new ES sedan at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, expanding the brand’s electrification strategy beyond its first EV model, the RZ crossover.

The eighth-generation of this cornerstone model introduces both hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) options, signalling Toyota’s luxury division is strengthening its commitment to electrification. This comes after what many industry observers have called a measured approach to the EV transition.

EV powertrain specs revealed

The ES electric lineup consists of two distinct models with impressive specifications. The entry-level ES 350e features a single motor with front-wheel drive producing 165 kW. This model weighs between 2 105 and 2 185 kg depending on specification and achieves a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 8,9 seconds. More importantly for EV enthusiasts, Lexus claims a maximum range of 685 km on a single charge.

More power and speed

For those seeking more performance, the twin-motor ES 500e offers all-wheel drive with a combined output of 252 kW. Despite its additional power and slightly heavier weight (2 205 to 2 285 kg), the ES 500e delivers an impressive 0-100 km/h time of 5,9 seconds while still maintaining a substantial driving range of 610 km.

Both models utilise Lexus’ advanced electric architecture that prioritises efficiency without compromising its luxury ethos, the brand claims.

Platform designed for electric future

The new ES rides on a reimagined TNGA GA-K platform specifically designed to accommodate both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. This platform enables a lower center of gravity while maintaining the refined driving experience Lexus customers expect, the automaker says.

At 5 140 mm in length, the new ES is 165 mm longer than its predecessor, providing additional interior space particularly beneficial for rear passengers.

Design evolution

Design-wise, the new ES draws inspiration from the Lexus LF-ZC concept, sporting the brand’s evolved Spindle Body front end and new Twin L-Signature lighting elements. Aerodynamics played a key role in shaping the vehicle’s exterior, with Lexus engineers focusing on both aesthetics and performance.

Luxury cabin experience

Inside, the ES cabin aims for a luxury lounge atmosphere with expanded dimensions for enhanced legroom. Premium features include an electronically dimmable panoramic roof, ambient lighting, and various new trim options. Sustainability appears to be a focus, with synthetic leather options and bamboo-based fragrance systems reflecting the brand’s Japanese heritage.

Advanced safety features

The vehicle also incorporates the latest version of Lexus Safety System+, featuring improved object recognition capabilities, broader sensor coverage, and enhanced driver assistance features.

On its way to SA

While the global reveal has taken place, Lexus South Africa has yet to confirm specifications, model variants, and available technologies for local customers. This information will be released closer to the ES’s official launch date in South Africa.

For Lexus enthusiasts who have been waiting for the brand to further expand its electric offerings beyond the RZ, the new ES lineup represents a significant step forward in the luxury electric vehicle market, bringing competitive range figures and performance that should appeal to premium EV buyers.
