Fans are left disappointed by the omission of Cape Town from the 2024 calendar, but local organisers e-Movement and the City of Cape Town promise a bigger race event in 2025.
Following a meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council, the Formula E calendar for Season 10 in 2024 has been announced, but with Cape Town excluded from the list. The schedule includes new races in Shanghai and Tokyo, and a return to Hyderabad, Diriyah, and São Paulo.
Cape Town a race-fan favourite
FIA Formula E co-founder and chief championship officer, Alberto Longo says “Cape Town was a highlight of Season 9, not just for local fans at the race, but for TV viewers around the world who tuned in to see spectacular racing against the iconic backdrop. We remain completely supportive of the local stakeholders and know they are doing all they can to stage a Formula E race in 2025.”
The organisers of this year’s race event, e-Movement and the City of Cape Town, are positive the Mother City will host a Formula E race in 2025. “We remain committed to the goal of bringing the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship back to Cape Town in 2025,” e-Movement says in a media release.
“We are confident that the additional time and the ongoing local support from our valued partners and supporters mean Cape Town can be announced as a host city when the provisional calendar for Season 11 is published in June next year,” e-Movement says.
City remains committed
The media release from e-Movement includes a statement from the City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member JP Smith, who says the City remains committed to bringing Formula E back in 2025. “Having staged such a successful 2023 race, the lead time of just 16 months will allow for a long-term plan to be put in place to ensure the E-Prix returns to Cape Town on a regular basis,” Smith says.
Iain Banner, chairman of Formula E Cape Town, says “Building on the phenomenal success of this year’s event, we plan to surprise and delight South Africans when we do it again in 2025. In the meantime, as we lay the foundation for an even bigger and better event, we continue with all our purpose work in 2024, including staging Africa’s Green Economy Summit (AGES) in February 2024, Formula Student Africa, and Go Green Africa.
“We wish all the teams a fantastic season as they bring Formula E fever to China, India, and the US. As a local promoter, we’re on a drive for 2025,” Banner concluded.
