BMW has pulled the wraps off its updated iX electric SUV, bringing significant improvements in range, performance, and technology to its flagship electric vehicle.
Set for a global market launch in later in 2025, the refreshed iX will arrive with new model designations reflecting its enhanced capabilities: iX xDrive45, iX xDrive60, and the high-performance iX M70 xDrive.

Class-leading driving range
The headline figure is the significantly improved electric range, with BMW claiming the iX xDrive60 can now travel up to 701 km on a single charge according to WLTP standards – representing an increase of approximately 60 km. This positions the iX as a segment leader in terms of range capability.

Range improved by 40%
The entry-level iX xDrive45 sees a substantial 40% improvement in range capability, now offering between 490-602 km, while the performance-focused iX M70 xDrive delivers 521-600 km.
BMW attributes these gains to advanced battery technology, refined power electronics, and optimised wheel bearings and tires with reduced rolling resistance. Overall, consumption has been reduced by more than 8% in WLTP testing.

More power across the model line-up
All three variants receive power increases. The iX xDrive45 gets a substantial 60kW boost to 300 kW, reducing its 0-100 km/h time to 5,1 seconds. The xDrive60 model now produces 400 kW, while the range-topping M70 xDrive delivers up to 485 kW in My Mode Sport, enabling a 0-100km/h sprint in just 3,8 seconds.

Sportier styling
Visually, the iX receives subtle but effective updates with a focus on sportier aesthetics. The front end features a redesigned kidney grille with a more filigree frame and new internal structure of vertical and diagonal lines. New headlights incorporate vertical LED units for daytime running lights and turn indicators.

Both front and rear aprons have been revised with a cleaner design and more body-coloured surfaces. For the first time, BMW is offering an M Sport package for the iX, bringing more aggressive styling elements including larger air intakes.

Snazzy paint colours
Six new exterior paint finishes join the lineup: Arctic Race Blue metallic, Dune Grey metallic, Carbon Black metallic, BMW Individual Frozen Deep Grey metallic, BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey metallic, and Tanzanite Blue metallic, with Space Silver metallic arriving in summer 2025.

Improved charging capabilities
Charging speeds have also been enhanced, with the xDrive45 now supporting DC fast charging at up to 175 kW (up from 150 kW), while other variants can accept up to 195 kW. All models benefit from optimised battery preconditioning using a heat pump system for more efficient charging.
The charging socket now features a release button for easier use, and all variants support Plug & Charge functionality for simplified authentication at compatible charging stations.

Interior updates
Inside, the iX retains its minimalist, spacious cabin but adds new M Sport package options including M multifunction seats with enhanced lateral support, a sport steering wheel, and Dark Silver trim finishers.

The BMW Operating System 8.5 powers the infotainment system, with improved connectivity through 5G, and enhanced digital services including video streaming and in-car gaming.

Foam-insulated tyres
For the first time in this segment, BMW is offering optional 23-inch light alloy wheels alongside new 21-inch and 22-inch designs. The 22- and 23-inch wheels come with special foam-insulated tyres for improved noise isolation.
The refreshed BMW iX range is expected to arrive in South Africa in mid-2025, with pricing to be announced closer to the launch date.
