Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce a new seven-seater SUV – the Tayron – positioning it between its Tiguan and Touareg models. The German-built vehicle will arrive in South African showrooms in the second half of 2025.

The Tayron appears to be VW’s response to growing demand for larger family SUVs, incorporating several premium features previously exclusive to the flagship Touareg, including HD matrix headlights and seats with pneumatic massage functions.

Two trim levels will be available at launch. The entry-level Life model comes with features typically found in more expensive vehicles, including adaptive cruise control, wireless smartphone integration, and a three-zone climate control system. Nine airbags are standard, along with several driver assistance features like lane-keeping and automatic emergency braking.

The higher-spec R-Line adds sportier styling with unique bumpers and 19-inch wheels, plus leather sports seats and expanded ambient lighting with 30 color options. Both models include a new safety feature that prevents doors from being opened when vehicles are approaching from behind.

Optional extras mirror those of luxury SUVs, with VW offering a 700-watt Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic sunroof, and advanced driver assistance that can handle both steering and speed control.

While the Tayron’s engine specifications remain under wraps, industry experts suggest it will likely share powertrains with the recently updated Tiguan range, given their similar positioning in VW’s lineup.

The Tayron will be manufactured at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant, though pricing and detailed specifications for the South African market will be announced closer to launch.
